Percorrendo la strada comunale che proviene da Montecatini Terme, dopo il nucleo di Vico posto all’incrocio delle strade che conducono anche alla Montagna e a Pistoia attraverso la splendida strada tra uliveti della Nievole sulla quale sorge anche il campeggio montecatinese e la cooperativa degli ovicoltori, si giunge a Porta di Borgo. Prima di arrivare ad una piazzetta alberata posta davanti ad un nucleo abitativo antistante l’antica Porta, troviamo, sulla sinistra un ampio parcheggio seminascosto da un muretto di pietra e sulla destra il cimitero locale. Delle sette porte, che secondo la memoria degli storici locali, si aprivano sulle mura che circondavano Montecatini Alto, l’unica rimasta è quella di Porta di Borgo. Da questa si diparte quella che era la principale strada d’accesso al Paese. Percorribile anche da carrozze, cavalli od animali da soma, nonostante in alcuni tratti fosse abbastanza ripida, ma tutta lastricata e tenuta in buon ordine. Lungo la strada ai cui lati sorgono case in pietra ed orti, appena inizia la salita, si trova sulla sinistra l’ingresso della Chiesa di Santa Maria a Ripa con adiacente il Monastero fino a tempi recenti di clausura. Appena oltrepassa to il convento, sulla destra, una strada vicinale conduce al campo sportivo del Paese gestito dall’U.S.M.A. Nel sec. XIV era edificata nella zona una piccola chiesa intitolata a Santa Maria a Ripa e dipendente dalla Pieve di Montecatini. Nel 1537 un gruppo di pie donne montecatinesi vi fondarono un convento abbracciando la regola di S. Agostino. Al momento attuale, dopo una serie di peripezie, il convento e la chiesa, adeguatamente restaurati, sono occupate da una piccola comunità religiosa di monache benedettine (provenienti dal soppresso convento di Santa Maarta di Borgo a Buggiano).

 4th Itinerary – Porta di Borgo

Driving across the road from Montecatini Terme and passing through Vico at the crossroad leading to the mountains and to Pistoia between olive groves in the Nievole valley, where the Montecatini campsite and the olive growers cooperative are located, you reach Porta di Borgo. Before arriving in a small tree-lined square in front of a group of buildings before the ancient gateway, on the left we find a large car park partly hidden by a low stone wall and on the right the local cemetery. Porta di Borgo is the only gateway remaining of the seven ones, local historians believe were opened in the walls surrounding Montecatini Alto. The main access road to the town is departing from this gateway. It could be passed through carriages, horses or pack animals as despite being quite steep in parts, it was all paved and kept in good conditions. Along the road flanked by stone houses and vegetable gardens, on the left at the beginning of the ascent is the entrance to the church of Santa Maria a Ripa with the monastery alongside, an enclosed community until recent times. On the right as soon as you go past the monastery there is a road that leads to the town’s sport field managed by the U.S.M.A. Montecatini Alto sports union. In the 14th century in this area there was a small church named after Santa Maria a Ripa which depended on the parish church of Montecatini. In 1537 a group of pious women from Montecatini founded a convent there and embraced the rule of Saint Augustine. At present, after a series of vicissitudes, the suitably restored monastery and church are occupied by a small religious community of Benedictine nuns (from the dissolved convent of Santa Marta in Borgo a Buggiano).
